Waves crash with a deep, resonant thrum, felt in your chest, while the salty air mingles with earthy scents of seaweed and pine. The frosty sand and icy tide pools reflect the pale winter sun, and the distant cry of seabirds completes the symphony. Carissa and Brett’s December engagement session was like a scene from a movie. We stepped onto the empty beach in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where the winter beauty and their love created an unforgettable story. Despite the chill, they dressed as if it were a warm fall day—chunky sweaters, fashion boots, and velour button-ups. Carissa’s style was particularly captivating. Later, she changed into a sweater dress with tall boots, and Brett donned a dressy button-up with a matching vest. I always recommend a blanket, hand warmers, and a jacket to warm up between shots, proving you can stay stylish without bulky winter clothes.

As we began the session, the brisk sea breeze greeted us, adding a refreshing touch to the day. The waves crashed rhythmically against the shore, their sounds reverberating through the stillness, creating a natural symphony. The sun hung low in the sky, casting a soft, golden light that danced on the frosty sand and glimmered in the tide pools, making every moment feel like a scene from a romantic film. Carissa and Brett’s laughter mingled with the sounds of the ocean; their joy palpable in the cool, salty air. We started with playful shots near the water’s edge, the couple’s interactions full of warmth and spontaneity. Brett would wrap Carissa in his arms, pulling her close as they both laughed, their breath visible in the chilly air. Consequently, the serenity of the beach allowed them to be completely themselves, creating genuine, heartfelt moments that I was honored to capture.

During a quiet moment, I asked them to pause and simply look at each other, to take in the beauty of where they were and what this moment meant. As they stood there, surrounded by the endless expanse of the ocean and the boundless sky, it was as if time stood still. The connection between them was tangible, a testament to their love and the journey they were on together.
Building a Connection: Making Clients Feel Comfortable
Getting out of your comfort zone to try something new isn’t always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding. I strive to make every couple feel deeply comfortable with me before I start taking photos. I value connection more than words can express. The goal of each session is to feel like an extension of the couple on the other side of my lens. I want to feel your love, your emotions, your story. When I capture these moments, they become more than just images—they become a narrative of your love.
Unveiling the Story: Genuine Emotions and Moments
Carissa and Brett are truly special. From our first conversation to the day of the shoot, it felt like I was spending time with old friends. As the session unfolded, their layers peeled back, revealing a beautiful, heartfelt story. We ran, we laughed, we got vulnerable. Indeed, the greatest gift you can give your photographer is to open your heart completely.
