Over the years, I’ve fallen in love with the art of flat lay styling. Every stationery suite I’ve photographed has been uniquely designed for a couple, yet somehow, the details seamlessly blend into their wedding story. That’s the magic of styling it’s a perfect balance of creativity, intentionality, and a little bit of trial and error.

Through countless weddings, I’ve built a styling kit that I never leave home without. While I have my personal favorites, I wanted to share what I consider a great starter kit for anyone looking to elevate their flat lays. If you’re a fellow creative wanting to add styling to your workflow but don’t know where to begin, I’m here to tell you, you don’t need a massive collection to get started. A few essentials can go a long way!

Where to Begin

Before we dive into my must-have tools, here are a few simple tips to help you create a beautiful and cohesive flat lay:

1. Plan Before You Start

Arrange your stationery first before adding extras. Creating a layout beforehand helps bring your vision to life, especially if you’re working with limited time. As you start adding florals, jewelry, or other elements, your composition might evolve—and that’s okay!

2. Use Risers for Dimension

Flat lays don’t have to feel… flat! Using risers (small blocks or acrylic cubes) elevates different elements and adds depth to your design.

3. Straight Lines, but with a Twist

If you struggle with getting perfectly straight lines, try slanting your paper slightly. It keeps the composition structured while adding a touch of movement.

4. Don’t Overthink It!

This is a creative process let yourself have fun with it! Flat lays are a beautiful way to showcase your style while honoring the couple and the designer who crafted their stationery.

Inside My Styling Kit

Over time, I’ve built a kit filled with pieces that help bring flat lays to life. Some are functional, some are decorative, and a few have been collected over the years from antique shops and markets, adding their own character to each composition. Everything in my kit serves a purpose whether it’s adding texture, dimension, or a little personality.

Soft, Flowing Ribbon

Ribbon is one of those details that can completely change the feel of a flat lay. Whether it’s draped across a stationery suite or wrapped around a delicate ring box, it adds movement and softness. I keep a collection of silk and hand-dyed ribbons in neutral tones and muted pastels, colors that complement any wedding aesthetic. Some of my favorites come from Champagne & Grit and Styling Archives.

Ring Boxes That Tell a Story

A ring box isn’t just a prop. It holds one of the most meaningful details of the day. I carry a mix of velvet and linen boxes in different shapes and sizes, so there’s always one that fits the couple’s style. Whether it’s a classic square or something a little different like an oval or hexagon, each box is chosen with intention. A few of my go-to sources are The Mrs. Box, The Style Reserve, and for budget-friendly options, Amazon.

Dishes & Trays for Layering

Some of my favorite flat lays include small ceramic or metal dishes. They add texture and create a natural resting place for rings, wax seals, or delicate jewelry. I love mixing new and vintage pieces, each one brings something different to the composition. I’ve found some of my favorites at Target, Marshalls, Etsy, Olive & Oak, and tucked away in antique shops.

Styling Blocks for Dimension

Flat lays should feel dynamic, not one-dimensional. That’s where styling blocks come in. Placing them under stationery pieces adds depth and creates beautiful shadows. It’s a subtle difference, but one that makes an image feel more refined. I use blocks from Olive & Oak and keep a few different sizes in my bag.

Flower Bowls & Spikes for Perfect Florals

Not all flowers naturally lay the way I want them to. Flower bowls and spikes help keep them in place, making sure they stay open and positioned exactly where they need to be. Amazon and Chasing Stone have been my go to sources for these.

Small Antique Details

I’ve always loved little details that feel like they have a story to tell vintage keys, ornate scissors, wax seal pourers. They add character and give flat lays a touch of old world charm. Some of my favorite finds have come from Etsy and Amazon, but the best treasures always seem to appear when I’m not looking for them.

Specialty Finds That Make a Flat Lay Unique

Not everything in my kit falls into a specific category. Some of my favorite styling pieces are vintage stamps, heirloom figurines, and delicate perfume bottles. These little touches can make a flat lay feel truly one-of-a-kind.

Styling Surfaces That Set the Tone

A good backdrop can make all the difference. I keep a mix of neutral linen and textured surfaces, along with a few bold options for when I want something a little different. Some of my favorites come from Locus Collection, Olive & Oak, Lindale Studios, and Chasing Stone.

Each item in my kit is there for a reason. Some pieces are practical, some are sentimental, but all of them help me create flat lays that feel intentional and reflective of the couple’s story.
